February Half Term Week 2018

# Just before the half term week we had our Parent Teachers Meeting and for me will be the most memorable one so far.. Ni's teacher Miss Lotts began by saying that " Lovely Ni - why I can't have 30 of her in the class. Whatever work is given to her it is understood that she will finish it to the highest standard. She is the ideal child to have in class. Mathematics is her strong point. She is sociable and very much popular in class. She has the elements of showing depth in her studies which generally only 10% of the class can achieve.
# Aa's teacher Mrs Giddy said there is a considerable improvement in his handwriting and now he takes a lot of pride in his presentation of his work. He needs to raise his hand and say he does not understand any concept in Maths. He goes very well with Mrs Bains and they both have share a good bond.
# As and Aa left for India on Friday via Amsterdam. Unfortunately their luggage is misplaced and waiting for it to arrive. Luggage arrived finally on Sunday night.
# Saturday began with my Gym session of cardio and little bit of strength training ( chest and leg press). After that I went for a luxury facial for an hour and picked up Ni from her art class at Fairkytes centre. We were joined by Ja and her daughter at Wimpys Hornchurch for lunch. I had cheese and tomato toasties and black Americano and Ni had chicken nuggets with fries. We all four chatted and left after 2 hours from the restaurant.
# Other good news which happened this half term was that Ni was given an all clear for her vision. She no longer requires to wear glasses and her vision is perfect. She will be seen again in 9 months.
# Watched " Padmavat" at  Vue Cinema Romford with Uma. Glad I watched it finally!!
# Sunday morning I took appointment with Out of Hours GP for my rash and was prescribed a cream. This rash was causing me a lot of grief and glad that I found some relief after applying cream couple of times.
# We all went for " Paddington 2 " and enjoyed the movie. This was more funnier than the first one.
After the movie we went for lunch at Pizza Express with Ni's friend and her family.
# We all browsed few stores in The Brewery and bought a laundry basket / a rainbow slinky gifted by Ni's friend and then was dropped home by them.
# Did my Gym session of 1 hour 30 minutes.
# Monday - play date at my place / work from home / Ni's workshop / bought a brand new shiny rug / few potted indoor plants / made cabbage with peas.
# Tuesday - work from home / made Panchmel daal / bought two bright red cushions / Ni attended x 2 workshops in Explore Learning /
# Wednesday - Back to work / Ni and her friend attended the Explore Learning and then Ni spent the entire day with her / attended a soft launch party of my friend starting tea business.
# Thursday - work again / Ni's friend came over for couple of hours / Ni attended Phoenic Screener and Kip McGrath / came late from work / trip to Tesco /
# Friday - woke up at 5 am and logged in at work / Ni's 4 friends came over for play date/

Notes - Psychologies March 2016

This issue focused on learning to be confident - stop feeling small, start being brave.

* If we use these words " justs, sorry, thinks and feels " then it gives a hint to recipient that we are unsure of ourselves lessening their confidence in our ideas.

* Fill your basket with joy, not things. - our lives are becoming ever more complex due to the amount of information we deal with daily, and the number of decisions we are faced with.By removing some of these decisions, we can free up more of our minds to focus on the good stuff. It is estimated that an adult makes approximately 35,000 decisions a day. That does not leave much headspace for the rest of our day to day existence. By consuming less, we will hopefully realise how much time we spend distracted by buying that aren't important to our quality of life. For four consecutive days, do not buy anything beyond food and water. Doing something beneficial for ourselves by spending less means we are also doing something positive for everyone. Buy things in a medical emergency, and travel costs are a given, but cut out all the decisions that create white noise in your head and you might be struck by how free you feel.

* Ask someone younger...sometimes we are so busy looking at those who have gone before us that we forget about those leading from behind. The idea of reverse mentoring gives you fresh thinking about the insights or experiences that you can offer your mentor.

* The art of losing things - it may feel like a disaster at the time, but all is not actually lost when something precious vanishes.Losing things - the props of your life - can force you to embrace change in a way that can be hugely positive. We define ourselves by what we buy. Losing things can be an opportunity to re-evaluate who we think we are.

* 7 habits to build your confidence
    Assess yourself
    Keep learning
    Develop your Willpower
    Talk about your positive experiences
     Tone down your worst thoughts
     Ditch thinking for doing
    Adopt good posture

* Dancing with the bogey man - there is nothing as pointless in this life as hatred, although there are, of course, times when that sour emotion hits us so Hard in the solar plexus that we are left with indigestion, which repeats and repeats until we are acid with poison. It is difficult to deal with such toxic emotions and we all wrestle with them. Use a mental process called " parking" . If a thought about someone or something makes me feel terribly distressed I park it behind my left shoulder. I am not saintly enough to sprinkle those dark thoughts with shiny peace dust and send them off with a blessing , but I am human enough to know I need to remove them from the immediate vicinity of my head.

Budapest - Highlights Aug 2015

So finally after 2 years the waiting game got over and we flew to " BUDAPEST". The city is breathtaking as i have seen in pictures and read and heard about it. There are altogether 700 pictures which i think still cannot do full justice to what we had seen and experienced there. But few things i would like to note and write..
• Icecreams : I am not a Icecream person but due to the intense heat and walking i was quite keen on eating one as soon as got a chance. The one which i will always remember is this one in particular due to its sheer size and this was a kids portion๐Ÿ˜‚.

• Hungarian Parliament : Now this building and its surrounding areas was such that we visited three days in a row and saw it in the night and day. The place is awesome both in terms of size and architecture. Kids loved to run around in the vast space too.

• Water fountains and features : Budapest was full of these which was truly amazing !! There were old fountains where water coming out of Lions mouth or pools where you can dip your feet to cool yourself or timely mist spray which kids and adults loved equally.

• New York Cafe : When we booked our trip through BA we got Boscolo Residences as our hotel which is a part of Boscolo Group which had this Cafe ! Now this was quite unexpected. The definition of cafe has now a different meaning! The most ornate and beautiful cafe i have ever seen and probably will ever see in my life.

• Ervin Szabo Library : The most gorgeous library one can see ever..
This is a must visit in Budapest. Beautiful reading rooms that i could have spent the whole day there.

Burgers Galore Part One

Past week i made Burgers for dinner back to back. I found a book on Burgers in my local library and found two vegeterian recipes and so i made them. They looked pretty easy to follow and i think they were quite different to what i have eaten so far. The name of the book is "Burgers" by Valery Drouet and Pierre -Louis Viel.
The first recipe i tried was " Burgers with Mozzarella and Bell Peppers".

Ingredients
6 ciabatta rolls
1 yellow bell pepper
1 red bell pepper
1 green bell pepper
1 onion
3 tbsp olive oil
12 pitted green olives
6 tbsp (50 gms)pine nuts
generous 1lb smoked mozzarella
6 tbsp prepared pesto
generous 1 cup arugula
salt
milled pepper

Method

  • Seed the bell peppers and cut them into thin strips. Peel and slice the onion.
  • Heat the olive oil in a large skillet and fry the onion for 5 minutes. Add the bell peppers. Season with salt and pepper and cook for 15 minutes.
  • Chop the olives and toast the pine nuts in a non stick skillet with no oil for 2-3 minutes
  • When the bell peppers are tender, add the olives and pine nuts. Mix well.
  • Preheat the broiler.
  • Cut the mozzarella into 6 thick slices. Season with salt and pepper.
  • Cut the rolls in half and toast them lightly in the broiler.
  • Spread the pesto over the cut surfaces of the rolls.Distribute the arugula over the base of each roll, cover with a layer of the bell pepper mixture and top with a mozzarella slice.Close the rolls and serve immediately.

The List - December 2013

This is the first time i am doing this list inspired by Nupur's Lists of One Hot Stove.I usually write everything in my diary and try to incorporate everyday events in it.

Reading - This month has been the best month in terms of reading books as i read 5 books which is truly amazing by my standards.
I read "Cocoa at Midnight" by Kathleen Clifford;" Apron and Sliver Spoons" by Mollie Brown. These two books were a easy read. They are real life accounts of domestic servants and their hardships in pre war era.
The next book was very romantic novel by Jojo Moyes "The last letter from your lover". The book was hopelessly romantic and spanned two time lines - one from 1960 and other from present day.
Other books were "No time to say Goodbye" by Linwood Barclay - a thriller with a twist.I was so engrossed in reading the book that wanted to finish it soon.
And ended the year with Penny Vincenzi's " Love in the Afternoon and other short stories". I have never read her books before and did not find the book very interesting. The short stories were very predictable and short of any twists.

Watched " 12 Dates of Christmas " -  a romantic movie where the girl keeps reliving Christmas Eve 12 times and must break the cycle for her blind date.
Another one was " Cast Away" - A Tom Hanks movie - quite a depressing movie where he is stranded on an island for 4 years and comes back to find that her girlfriend is now married and has her own family.
This is the first time i bought Whats on TV - Holiday TV watching guide. I am so deprived of watching any Television or movies that this year i am quite keen to watch some good television.Top on my list to watch is " Downton Abbey" and "The Great British Bake Off."

Had a busy month in terms of Socialising.Attended Christmas Drinks with my ex - colleagues or golden oldies as they say. Also a Birthday Party of a 3 year old and ended the day with tea and some mince pies at a friends place.Christmas Day evening was spent with a family of four serving them  M&S Party food.Invited for lunch by a friend ( N and A ) at Langley.Just before the year ended i invited one of our friends for lunch who were visiting from Glasgow over holidays. I made Amritsari Chole , Delicate Korma with Apricots / Paneer Maalvani / Rice / Paneer and Pineapple Salad / served all with parathas and ended with tea and pistachio ice cream. New Year's Eve was spent with another set of friends and had such a pleasant time serving them Nachos with cheese / Mix Pakoras - Potato / Paneer / Cauliflower and Chillies/ Garlic Bread and Pizzas.

My son had a busy time over the month as well. Started with Christmas Fayre in school where he met Father Christmas and got presents. Took part in Christmas Raffle. We attended his first ever Christmas Concert. I don't think he was really into singing and was just interested in waving us.
His most busiest day was when he had Christmas lunch at school / Christmas party in his class/ School Disco and Christmas Party in his drama class. He also came to my office on Christmas Eve and got Face painting done.

The biggest high this month was that my son learnt to write his name - it was an amazing feeling to know that he is growing up and a first step of sorts for future.

Birthday Month and Diwali 2013

  • Had a very busy past month and it does not seem to be slowing down in any way. Apparently i feel that though i want my " free time" and some time to reflect and ponder i actually prefer to be busy and on my toes all the time.
  • Since October starts with my Birthday - i celebrated it with going out for lunch with Ashish to Jamie Oliver Restaurant at
  •  Canary Wharf. Since i go out so less to eat out i think whenever i go out i like them all.
  • This month also saw Nishka making multiple trips to GP for an infection which took a month to go away.
  • We became proud owners of an apartment in a Taylor Wimpey development and rented it out to one of Ashish's colleague.
  • Aayush has discovered that he loves playing with tools and has now multiple sets of tool sets. He spent his entire sunday with his dad helping him out and the flooring guy in the new apartment.
  • Couple of friends ( Richa/Nikhil and Manu/ Kapil invited us for dinner/ lunch at their homes with my parents. Had couple of lunch rendezvous with friends in Canary Wharf- With Smriti at HSBC Mezz Restaurant and also with Baljit / Ashish and Fabino at GBK. Ruchi/ Mayank bhaiya also invited us for Pre Diwali Dinner at their place.
  • My mother also made Diwali Snacks - Besan Laddoo, Chivda and Namak Paare.
  • First time ever we ordered food from a Bangladeshi eatery " Spices" for Karwachauth. The food consisted of Paneer Tikka,Chatpate Aloo,Chana Paneer,Kulcha,Daal Tadka, Vegetable Biryani and Naan. The food was not bad and Paneer Tikka and Chana Paneer were good.
  • My mom made an excellent Diwali Dinner - A typical Rajasthani fare - Daal Baati / Gatte ki sabzi / Rice and Baigan Bhartha ( a punjabi addition ) and Jeera Aloo. My contribution was Shrikhand for dessert.
  • We had quite a few get togethers this month - which takes a lot of planning and energy and time but i guess at the end it is all worth it.

Fridge Freeezer Clean Up

My Fridge and Freezer are generally organized and I try and keep them clean as much as possible.I do wipe the surfaces every week and mostly use up all my vegetables and fruits.

This is the picture before the clean up was done.

Three things which are always there in my fridge :-
Peppa Pig and Thomas Yogurt ( Kids Yogurt)
Philadelphia Cream Cheese ( Different varieties each time )
Milk Roll ( Bread)
My Freezer is filled with frozen Haldiram’s meals like DaalMakhani / Sandwich Dhokla/ AlooTikkis.
Also there are a couple of Ice- Creams – Angry Bird Lollies / Peppa Pig Milk Bites / Plain Vanilla Icecream
I have also frozen DaalMakhani and Paneer with Spring Onions made by me to be used in those evenings when I will be no mood to cook.

Three things which are always there in my freezer :-
Green Peas – This is the only vegetable which is in my freezer all year around. My son takes them in his school lunch bag everyday.
Paneer – Always have paneer in my freezer – either a slab of it or cubed. One of my staple ingredients when some guests are dropping by.
The most unusual item in my fridge would be Green chillies in brine – I bought them to make Mexican Casserole. I have used quite a lot of it. But it is still there and I need to finish it soon as it has got quite old now.
Another item which I bought was Bombay Sandwich Chutney – I bought it on a whim and I knew it will take ages to finish. Thanks to my perseverance it is now finished. I have used generously on my cucumber sandwiches which I take daily to work.
Here is the picture after the clean up and organization was done.

News Flash 27.7.13

  • Made “ Delicate Korma with Cashews and Apricots”   and “ Black Eye Peas with Coconut from AnjumAnand’s Vegetarian book. The curries turned out excellent and was not that difficult to make. A little bit of planning was required and that’s all
  • Aayush and Nishka have been enrolled with Everyone Active Swimming lessons now and go to Tuedays 3:30 and Sundays 1:30 respectively.
  • Currently reading “ Dead Simple” by Peter James from the Reading Club at Hornchurch Library. It is more than a year now since I joined and I look forward to those First Tuesdays or Thursdays when we meet. It has been a good experience as I have read quite a good collection and very different from each other.
  •   Have been actively using the Goodreads app on my phone. Kept a list of books which I have read in the past one year. Also love the fact that you can be in touch with your friends that what are they reading and add it to your list.
  •  Aayush will be joining Nelmes Primary School in September this year. He has finished his time in Georgie Porgy Preschool and loved it. I am looking forward for Nishka to start her time in school as well.
  • We have been to one of the Open Days at Nelmes Primary and bought Aayush’s school uniform. Still have to buy shoes and trousers for his session to start on 23rd Sep 2013.
  • Jayeeta  andSudeep with their daughters came over for lunch. I made Daal Maharani ( recipe taken from Ribbons to Pasta Blog ) , Paneer with Spring Onions ( Nita Mehta Paneer recipes ) , Korma with Cashews and Apricots ( AnjumAnand Vegetarian Book ) , Peas Pulao ( One Hot Stove Food blog) and all this served with Garlic and Coriander Naan and BoondiRaita.
  • Aayush had his Graduation Ceremony at Georgie Porgy Preschool on 19th July 2013. He was a very popular boy in his school and was called a” Superstar”. At first we assumed he has not understood the event but since he is back from the party he keeps looking at his card and the teachers photo printed on it. Surprisingly he knows all the names of the teachers.
  •  Weather in London is too good to be true.. We are having a heatwave which last happened in 2006. Windows are open all day at home and have 2 pedestal fans which are on throughout the day. Temperature is touching 30 on most days.

The words she says most of the time is “ mummy/ mumma , papa, kaka, bye, babu, daddu, dadi.Whenever Nishka says bye she gives flying kiss to the person and says “mum” for water and “dudu” for when she needs milk.
  • Both brother and sister just love each other to bits and do all sorts of antics with each other. It is a pleasure to watch them grow almost together. Aayush is a very caring brother and does not like when somebody scolds Nishka. He will be the first person to come and defend Nishka even though the fault was of her.
  • It is birthday month in my family. Both my nephew and niece celebrated their 4th and 10th birthdays this week. Kids had their parties in respective party places with their friends and adults gorged on home cooked pooris / chole and pulao and pizzas.

  • Ashish off to Chennai again and will be back exactly on his birthday. It has been a year since he has been going to India for work. I think the novelty has worn off now.

  • Also planning to enrol him in Drama Classes locally..taking him to first trial class tomorrow. Let’s see how it goes.

Things in my Freezer

I came across this post where everybody was sharing what is there in their freezer. I have done a post long time ago about what's in my fridge. And since i have been out of blogging for a very long time, this post is a good starting point.I have 4 drawers in my freezer.I have a very few basic staples in my freezer which are constant and hardly change. In my first drawer i have 3 frozen Margherita Pizzas and 2 Tortilla wraps. We generally buy Margherita pizzas and then customise it by adding toppings of our choice.Second drawer consist of Frozen chips, Petit Peas and Mixed vegetables.
